Dope Movie Script Critique
Author: darkangelproject
There are a plethora of movies with a good script but the directing kills the vibe. The story is a wonderful tale but to get there is like pulling teeth or grinding sand. Today is a new day for new movies and scripts.
Many films rely on a repetitive, frustrating template, where characters are either too clueless to grasp basic truths or deliberately shielded from urgent realities, driving the plot through contrived circumstances. The “dumb” act, intended to inject tension or irony, often makes the story feel shallow, as if mishaps and obliviousness—rather than character depth or meaningful conflict—are what propel the narrative. This is compounded by an overused dichotomy between good and evil, where evil is portrayed as innately more powerful, resourceful, and well-organized than good, painting a cynical view of humanity. It often feels as if the “good guys” are almost guaranteed internal betrayal, adding to the sense that evil wins by default due to sheer numbers, cleverness, or corrupt loyalty.
Further, the trope of a power-hungry, insatiable antagonist—a character dissatisfied with their lot and determined to seize what belongs to others—is an overly simplistic villain archetype. These characters are rarely given depth beyond a caricature of ambition or greed. Their motivations, founded on a perpetual desire for more, lack the complexity that could make their actions compelling. This one-dimensional representation makes their role predictable, as the audience sees this “inferior” character as doomed to act out of desperation rather than any substantial reasoning or relatability.
Moreover, a problematic layer of implicit bias often underscores these narratives, particularly in how villains or antagonistic forces are portrayed. Films frequently lean on familiar social stereotypes, with villains painted as “other” or foreign, subtly echoing racial or cultural biases. This adds an uncomfortable undercurrent to many of these stories, as certain traits or backgrounds are positioned as markers of evil or untrustworthiness. In this sense, these scripts mirror societal prejudices, creating a harmful equivalency between “foreignness” and villainy. This approach to villainy not only simplifies the narrative but also reflects real-world biases, reinforcing outdated and insensitive ideas of “us versus them” that mirror the human equivalent of racist undertones.
Ultimately, the recurring reliance on these tropes reflects a stale approach to storytelling, one that seems to trade authentic human experience and moral complexity for a series of predictable emotional triggers. By hinging on shallow archetypes and familiar prejudices, these stories not only undermine their own potential for depth but also contribute to a harmful narrative template that echoes larger societal issues in how we define “good” and “evil.”
List of Movies with Great Story Line but Bad Directing. The Dragon Prince is similar to The Last Airbender Avatar. The animation and writing style are comparable.
