Baton Rouge, LA — John Piper Matthews, New Sony recording Artist known by his stage name DopeBoyBluez, is revolutionizing the Southern Soul music industry with his groundbreaking new Southern Soul genre, "Nubluez." Born on October 3, 1980, in Clinton, Louisiana, this American singer and songwriter is positioning himself as one of the greatest artists in the history of American blues-soul and a seminal figure in soul music and rhythm and blues.
Nicknamed “pipe” or “pike,” Matthews’ singing style draws inspiration from the Gospel music that laid the foundation for the genre. His raw talent and innate skills have influenced a new wave of Southern soul and hip-hop artists, igniting a renaissance in these genres during the early and mid-2000s under the consultant of darkangelproject/DopeBoyBluez LLC
Matthews’ journey in music began in the small town of Clinton, Louisiana, where he grew up as one of four brothers in a single-parent household. Despite their meager resources, they faced life’s challenges head-on. His mother, a strong churchgoer, sought solace in her faith to overcome life’s hardships.
Tithing, a religious tradition of offering 10% of one’s income to the church, was a significant sacrifice when 10% was the family’s entire income. John’s mother did her best to teach her children self-sufficiency in a world where formal education played a minor role. Street smarts and common sense were their primary tools for survival in their small country town.
Though none of John’s siblings, including himself, graduated from high school, it was evident from a young age that John possessed a unique gift for music. He sang in the church choir, and by age 10, he was not only singing but also playing drums and instruments. His high school years were marked by performances at talent shows, local parties, and neighborhood events, where he consistently garnered praise.
The real breakthrough came when John’s older brother, Steele, delved into the world of drug dealing, quickly becoming a prominent figure on the block. This endeavor allowed them to support themselves and their ailing mother, whose constant illness kept her away from home.
The rough and tumble of life taught John and his brothers invaluable street smarts, instilled a sense of independence, and paved the way for his future success. John’s mother, in her quest to prepare her children for life’s challenges, was an unwavering force in their upbringing.
John, influenced by legends such as Otis Redding, Jackie Wilson, James Brown, and Sam Cooke, credited his mother as his primary source of inspiration. In modern time most people say he sounds like Anthony Hamilton, Mystikal, and Anderson Paak. His music career, he often expressed, was a tribute to her and her determination to provide a better life.
However, life had its own plans for John. At 16, he left school to help support his family financially, as his father was absent from their lives. This turning point allowed him to build practical skills and further honed his performance abilities.
John’s early years in music saw him venture into rap with friends and family, performing live and recording their music. They took to the streets to distribute their CDs, a lucrative endeavor. A chance meeting with Retired National Guard Sergeant Robert Y. Flowers – L.S. (Lyrically Speaking), a well-known local producer, marked the beginning of their music recording journey.
With an entrepreneurial spirit, they promoted their music, catching the attention of local music enthusiasts. The group Tearitdown ENT was born, although it experienced frequent name changes and internal disagreements.
John’s meteoric rise was not without its challenges. During a performance at Buck’s Place, an altercation left him injured and shaken. The incident made it clear that the music industry could be a dangerous place, especially when associating with the wrong crowd.
John and L.S. shifted their focus back to the studio, improving their recording skills and exploring new production techniques. This creative endeavor paved the way for their unique music style, later known as “Nubluez.”
Connecting with renowned artists from both the Southern and Northern music scenes, John embarked on a journey that would define his career. Collaborations with the likes of Sam-I-AM, Lil Boosie, Kevin Gates, and Lil Wayne began to shape his musical identity.
In 2000, John gained recognition with the release of the “Dastranger Compilation,” a self-titled project produced by his cousin Playa Pizzle producer of “Money maker” with 2 Chainz and Lil Wayne. His innovative approach extended to his CDs, which featured laser-printed images. They developed their presence on music websites, setting the stage for their future in the industry.
The turning point arrived when John signed with Krucial Records in collaboration with the producer duo East & West, financed by NBA legend John “Hot Rod” Williams. The album “So Krucial” marked the beginning of a new phase in John’s career, featuring hit tracks such as “Shake a Leg” and “C-Town.”
The journey took them to New York, where they crossed paths with fellow artists and industry professionals Jaz-O. The relationships forged during this trip were crucial in advancing their music career.
However, fame had its drawbacks, including challenges with management and personal relationships. It was clear that John was evolving as an artist and as an individual, adopting a more mature and responsible outlook on life.
In 2014, John embarked on a remarkable journey by introducing “DopeBoyBluez,” his self-branded project that showcased his unique fusion of R&B, blues, and rap. The hit debut single “Keep Dancing” ,”Swing-out” and “Came 2 Party” was just a glimpse of what was to come.
Despite the challenges of the industry and personal struggles, John remained unwavering in his commitment to music. His mother’s tragic passing in 2018 brought profound sorrow, but it also inspired a unique tradition. Every Mother’s Day, he organized a free concert to honor mothers, using music to uplift and bring joy to their special day.
In 2022, John’s career reached new heights as he joined KISS 94.1fm Meridian MS and WZKD: The Big KD 94.1fm, affiliated with King Russell Entertainment (KRE), a Sony/Universal music label now with Empire Records alongside Death Rose Records. KRE’s vision was to become the first Southern Soul label to secure Sony and Universal Distribution. John released “Sometimes she loves me” with King under Empire Records.
Despite several challenges in this partnership, John’s unique sound gained attention from Empire. His experiences touring with DJ Callie and other soul artists across three states broadened his reach and garnered more acclaim. They soon encountered Army Veterans William Stokes and Mr. Clarence, Gulf Coast Promotions who are pivotal figures in their journey along the Gulf Coast with assistance from Boss Ent Marquez Harness as Booking Manager.
In their pursuit of a major record deal, they crossed paths with Mr. Mike Boss of Rich Nation Entertainment LLC /Universal Music Group/Virgin Music/Sony Music, offering them a Sony/Rich Nation deal. This deal was a critical turning point, poised to elevate John’s career to the next level.
John’s upcoming album promises to be a masterpiece of music that will stand the test of time. However, with rising fame comes its share of challenges. Navigating the complexities of the music industry and maintaining personal integrity is an ongoing journey.
As DopeBoyBluez continues to break free from the confines of conventional music and explores his revolutionary Southern Soul “Nubluez” sound, the future holds the promise of a groundbreaking era in music. John’s dedication, resilience, and unwavering passion for his craft define his extraordinary journey and legacy.
